I have struggled for years with the desire to take my Cannon SLR/Nikon DSLR on mountain climbing trips to capture better photos than my small digital camera takes. The issue is that my backpack is full to the brim with camping and climbing gear, no room for the larger camera. I have also strapped the camera around my neck. This is no fun as the camera swings around and after a couple hours the weight of the camera strap around your neck is annoying. Backcountry Solutions has the perfect solution. Their Hands-Free Camera Harness definitely works for me. The harness attaches to your pack shoulder straps at the same place that your sternum strap connects. The harness has the same quick release buckles that most sternum straps have so you can still easily take your pack off. A supplied tripod hole knob is attached to the tripod hole in the bottom of your camera. The tripod hole knob fits in a keyhole attached to the harness. The hole knob supports the camera with the lens pointing down. The camera strap is around your neck but, is not weighted as the harness bears all the weight. There is also a strap attached to the harness at one end with the other end attaching to Velcro that you add to your lens cap. This allows removed lens cap to dangle while the camera is being used. To shoot photos, simply raise the camera out of the keyhole bracket. The camera strap then supports the camera, just like you are accustomed to shooting. I have used the harness while hiking, biking and climbing and found it totally comfortable and the camera always ready to shoot photos. You will never miss another shot. The only upgrade would be for the company to offer a waterproof camera cover for those inevitable rain storms.
